Mrs. Van Raalte and her husband met General Baden Powell on holiday and he asked their permission to use the island for an experiment with a group of boys. This was in Aug 1907, the first summer camp for Boy Scouts. Baden Powell ran the camp himself. The Van Raalte's have a castle on the island, and it's still there.
